Howdy. First post.

Photography is one of my hobbies. Well, not the artsy kind... I'm more into taking snapshots of interesting subject material, and anyone who's lived here for a while knows there's lots of funky stuff around Oly to photograph, to say the least.

My idea for this blog is to post a maximum of three photos per post in a series, showcasing Olympia's local graffiti, wall-art, murals, mosaics, paste-ups, stickers, and... unique artistic activism.

All photos posted are from my Flickr account and were taken by me. All rights reserved and all that noise. All photos will be posted in the default 'medium' size, and a link to access other sizes will be provided as well.

On to the first series of three... click the post title to view the whole post.

SAVE THE DATE!
The rave reviews just don't quit for Bainbridge Island's Jonathan Evison and his breakout debut novel All About Lulu. Don't miss the chance to come down to Orca Books and get to know him a little. Wrap your mind around All About Lulu , while you wrap your mitts around a local brew.

When: 6 p.m. Saturday, February 13, 2010

Where: Orca Books
509 E. 4th Ave
Olympia, Washington 98501

For more information, check out the February events at Orca Books: http://orcabooks.com/event

(from Publisher's Weekly):
Starred Review. Evison's debut—of love and loss, growing up, throwing up and moving on—is a stunner. William Miller Jr. is a scrawny loner whose mother dies of cancer when he is seven years old, leaving him an awkward vegetarian with an ominously macho father and idiot twin brothers in mid-1970s Santa Monica.

Evison provides readers a viciously funny and deeply felt portrayal of a blended family and one man's thwarted longing.

Cultural Ecology Inside Out: Personal to Planetary Transition with Robyn Francis

Wednesday, August 19 2009, 10 am – 8 pm

Terra Commons, 3725 36th Loop NW, Olympia, WA 98502

$65 + potluck meal offering

Navigating the great transition presents new opportunities and challenges on a deeply personal as well as societal level. We are effectively redefining and reinventing our culture from the inside out. As unsustainable systems collapse we have a unique opportunity to shape the new emerging culture.

This workshop explores tools and perspectives to facilitate this process drawing from ancestral wisdoms, deep ecology, permaculture, eco-literacy and socio-cultural ecology. Holistic change involves practical earth stewardship and personal development, integrating simple living, self-reliance and creative responses to build resilience into our lives and communities.

We will engage ritual, theatre, music, individual and group work, council of beings and creative processes as tools for personal and collective empowerment.

Pre-registration requested. Contact Marisha Auerbach: 360.273.7117 or queenbee-at-herbnwisdom.com

Now accepting Applications for Local Artisans APPLICATION DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 1, 2008

DUCK THE MALLS
6th Annual Arts and Crafts Sale at the Capitol Theater
Saturday, December 13, 2008, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 1, 2008

What is it?
An awesome local craft fair taking place inside the historic downtown Olympia Capitol Theater. The sale was created to support local and independent artisans and artists in the South Sound and visual art programming at the Olympia Film Society. Duck the Malls gives the community another great opportunity to shop locally, creatively, and alternatively for the holidays and support true craftsmanship!

When is it?
Saturday December 13th at the Capitol Theater from 11 am-4 pm. What are the requirements? To participate in Duck the Malls you must be selling LOCAL and HANDMADE ORIGINAL objects. Those wishing to sell cds, imports, food items, cosmetic products or services need not apply. No store bought or mass- produced items. We want to see what our brilliant local independent artists/crafters are making, not what is being churned out in the supermalls these days.

How much does it cost?
The booth fee will be $30 dollars for Olympia Film Society members and $40 dollars for non-members. Another great reason, besides all the wonderful movies and events, to become an OFS member.

How do I apply?
Simply send us an e-mail at artgallery@olympiafilmsociety.org with the following information…

  • A couple JPGS of your work.
  • A description of your work and how you make it.
  • Your name and business name if you have one.
  • Have you participated in previous Duck the Malls sales? If yes, please list years of participation.
