Ballet Arts Olympia is giving it another month to see if they can make a go of it. They're hoping September has been a busy month and that folks will soon flock to sign up their kids for dance instruction. If you or anyone you know is interested call Suzi @ 943-7781. As I wrote earlier my daughter has spent over half her life dancing here and it has been a consistently good experience.

Ballet Arts Olympia, a dance school on the westside, is closing. My daughter has been dancing there over half her life. She learned a lot about dance, her body, made new friends and participated in recitals at the Washington Center each spring.

Some of the teachers left to open another place, drawing away enough students so Ballet Arts couldn't afford to continue operations. There is a slim chance it may be able to rise from the ashes. If you know any kids who are interested in dance, have them call Suzi @ 943-7781. It's more than just ballet, they also taught jazz, Irish and modern dance as well as creative movement for the really young ones.

Come check out the KICK ASS dance party I'm throwing in Oly to help benefit KOWA 106.5 low-power community radio!!

It is called Oly Equinox 2008!!

It will be in the basement of the Eagles Hall in Oly on September 20th!!! We will be celebrating the return of darkness as the days become shorter and the darkness takes over!!

DJ Seth Myles of San Diego (he is a superstar in the southwest) will be headlining the event. Also appearing will be KOWA's own Fallout Sessions crew also known as Opposing Nature. There may also be a special appearance by Aktion T4 (an industrial techno band).

There will be 2 kegs of Pabst Blue Ribbon ($5 all you can drink!) and a cover charge of 3 bucks. Try spending that much at a bar!

So come dance your ass off and help support your local community radio, KOWA 106.5 low-power fm and Media Island International!

Just in case anyone happens to be heading back east this weekend...

It’s been quite a year for the legendary West Coast pioneer DJ DAN. If you’ve been to some of the major electronic music festivals or clubs across the country, you’ve probably caught DJ Dan tearing up a dancefloor alongside his tour partner Donald Glaude on their groundbreaking In Stereo 2x4 Tour. Taking a break from that tour, DJ Dan is coming back to Sullivan Room for a very special solo set on Saturday, July 19th. After devastating the club in November, Dan’s heady mix of electro and driving house will be back to pack the Sullivan Room dancefloor for Basic NYC.

A lifelong west coaster (and native of Olympia, Washington), DJ DAN has been a beloved veteran of the electronic music circuit for over 15 years now. There's no nonsense about the way Dan approaches his music, no pseudo-seriousness: he's all about making the party more explosive each and every time he gets on the decks. Energetic house, techno, breaks and funk are all part of his arsenal, and he's equally as comfortable rocking huge venues as he is in the smaller rooms. Coachella, the Love Parade, Ministry of Sound and the huge Creamfields festival have all been stops for Dan over the years, and his international DJ itinerary is packed every weekend.

I've attended this a few times in the past year with my kids and we've always had a blast. It's one of my favorite things in Olympia.

Family Dance Night in downtown Olympia at Fusion the Integrated Body 302 Columbia St. (across Olympia Ave. from the Olympia Center) fully wheelchair accessible Saturday March 15th 2008 6-8pm

This wonderful event full of laughter, movement, friendship, and play happens every other month. It’s two hours of music and dance activities that are inclusive of all ages and abilities. Grandparents and infants, schoolchildren and even some teens come together for the joy of dancing. Activities like shape museum where your dance takes you to interlocking shapes with others, rivers and rocks and bridges, dancing with scarves, in costumes or riding on a pull cloth, make it interactive and playful. The evening flows between structured dance activities and free dancing. A variety of music; old and contemporary, in many styles, changes the mood and gives everyone a chance to do their kind of dance. Cost for the whole family what ever size and configuration is $5 to $10 sliding scale (but please join us regardless of your ability to pay).

The Illuminated Ball is not only a key fundraiser for Olympia's Procession of the Species, it is an artful experience in its own right. This year's theme is the Tree of Life and will feature a floor show dance, live music, light and luminaria. At the end of the floor show, the New Orleans funk band, Bump Kitchen will perform. All of this plus food and drink at the amazingly cool Eagles Grand Ballroom at Fourth and Plum. Advance tickets are $40 at Traditions or $45 at the door. I recommend getting advance tickets.

Or go here.

The Wild Grace Arts Winter Solstice event is a movement ritual that blends yoga and dance. It is a process that allows for the release of unuseful patterns, an ecstatic dance to celebrate the return of the light and an opportunity to clarify your intentions for the new year.
