PBIA Meeting

The PBIA (Parking and Business Improvement Area) Advisory Board to the City will be holding a regular business meeting this Thursday, March 27th from 6-8 pm in the MIXX 96 conference room located on Washington St. between 4th and State. I've attached the agenda. Public comment is welcome at the beginning of the meeting, from rate payers or the public in general.

The PBIA (Parking and Business Improvement Area) Advisory Board will be holding a regular meeting this Thursday at 6 pm in the MIXX 96 conference room. The meeting is open to the public and there is time set aside for public comment/communications at the beginning of the agenda. Any and all are welcome. The bulk of the meeting will be focusing on advertising and marketing.

Downtown business closures & vacant space

I recently heard that Whirligig is closing and yesterday I noticed a "Going Out of Business" sign on the Chinese(?) wares store located next to Last Word Books on 4th. I remember in a past post on Otto's closure Mathias of einmaleins mentioned the feeling of downtown business owners that with the way things are going more and more businesses would follow.

So I guess this post is for two purposes: 1) To remind people that if they are planning on spending, to please try to keep the dollars local (instead of fast food, IKEA, Walmart, etc.) 2) Does anybody know where to get updated statistics on downtown vacancies? The only numbers I was ever able to find put the percentage North of 16% and called that an acceptable rate (despite the entirety of Pierce County being at 7%, for example). Also, average prices per square foot in downtown Olympia compared to neighboring downtown cores would be good numbers to have.

Ethics

Many of society's current stresses and strains can be traced to unethical behavior. Some are quick to assume personal benefit - even if it is at the sake of another's well-being.

The planet is suffering. The oceans' fish stocks are in decline and commercial fishing (of wild stock) is expected to fail before mid-century. Human society is causing global warming, the pH of oceans is rising with the absorption of massive amounts of carbon. Humans kill each other over territory and resources. Innocent people are hurting because of the specific actions of others.

I am interested in discussing how ethical decision making (or the lack thereof) in business and government affects the individual and society.
