I've got some questions about OlyBlog:
How often do the "Docents" turn over? How are the Docents selected? I've been reading this thing for a while but I'm still a little unclear on what OlyBlog is and how it's run.
Also who is in charge of the technical aspects behind OlyBlog? I get an error every time I post or write a comment.
Lastly. Comments are screened before they are posted?? That seems pretty authoritarian to me. Why not just screen the comments for spam after the fact? I understand taking off comments that are straight up threats or hate, but other than that why are the editors of this website being censors? Is this a place for free speech and open discourse or does this site represent the view points of a minority of editors? I participate in a lot of social media sites, very few feel the need to moderate comments before they are posted. Even blogs that get hundreds of thousands of readers per day don't moderate before posting.

I've asked a lot of the same things...

Submitted by Rick on Sat, 01/12/2008 - 7:37am.We've been doing this for a couple of years now, and it has been our experience that people who are new to the blog tend towards conflict and anger. It takes a little while to learn how to be respectful of the community. Hence, the comments are screened until it is evident that folks are able to contribute in a positive manner. (As you can see, we have a wide range of opinions represented on the blog, so this is not about editing out particular ideas.) I'm not sure what sites you're looking at that don't moderate comments. Most non-tech blogs do, in my experience.
You can read our social contract to learn about "the rules." You can also read the bylaws (under construction) to learn more about the mission, function, and particular of the organization.

What Rick said....kinda
Submitted by Anonymously Larry on Sat, 01/12/2008 - 8:05am.My personal experience was that I immediately admitted I had found Olyblog as an option to posting in The Olympian because Aaron Mason made the decision that I should not have posting privileges because 4 people called in to complain about my usage of the word "ass" in a post.
Upon my first post on Olyblog, I was cautioned by a couple of members about behavior (although I hadn't misbehaved). I wrote that off to protection of turf - and have learned that they had good reason to protect said turf. Ultimately, this space is private domain (Rick will kindly say the community is the owner) and thus, should be treated as such. Just as The Olympian had the right to ban me, OlyblogCommunity (there is a new word, Rick) has the right to "control" its domain.
I will say this - dispite a very heated discussion between myself and a docent or two, I have never (to my knowledge) beenrestricted in any way (there is a pesky spam filter, but I've checked in my tin foil hat). We somehow or another find ways of talking through issues (other members make for pretty darned good referees at times). If you really need release, I think there is arm wrestling that happens at the Brotherhood if issues can't be resolved here.
So, in closing I welcome you to Olyblog and hope that you find as much enjoyment and service as I find.
Be very careful of the caimans, though.
