Floating idea of buying a Prius and getting the conversion so that the car can be plugged in as well as running in "hybrid" mode...

...the goal would be to have a car co-op in Oly, so that folks could schedule and check-out the car when needed.

Big deal is getting members insured, and also getting the car all setup for "real world use" (I'm thinkging Class 2 hitch and nice little 2-axle trailer).

I'm also interested in folks know of a car like the Prius (as well developed) that has a diesel engine (for biofuels).

I'm just thinking of ways that I can use consumer credit to benefit my community, and it seems that having a local, "green" car solution might rock-

...any thoughts? Would folks use this? Would it be nice to drive to IKEA and not have to own the car?

Yay

I would love it if we had ZipCar or other similar program in Olympia. And locally run would make it ever better!

Thumbs up!

This sounds great, would be very interested in taking part in this.

inquired...

...with ZipCar about starting a branch down here (between the Seattle & Portland locations), but I'm thinking that perhaps just drawing up a business plan (Mathias? =) and "going for it" down here would be a good way to guage interest and viability-

There is a small business incubator in town as well and a strong EDC presence throughout Thurston County, so with a little luck and savvy, this may work.

...any ideas on collaborative funding?

(and thanks for the input so far =)

I like this idea but wonder

I like this idea but wonder if the costs would be as prohibitive as normal car rental costs. How would it work?

Insurance

One would need to form and LLC or other entity (like a Co-op) and have that entity purchase the car. The co-op model, not surprisingly, makes doing things like this more difficult but I am sure there are accountants and laywers around who have done it. The purchase would still require some or all of the entity members to be on the hook for the car, but that is typical of any new business venture. It is a good idea, but there is certainly much tho think about. How to schedule to use? What kinds of restrictions? Deposits should someone, or drunk friends, drive off with it? Theft? Liability? All kinds of issues that would need to be sorted out. Like most, I would love to see it happen rather than wait for Zipcar to come rescue us from our backward, non-metro ways.

I'm thinking "out-loud"...

...and what I'm musing on is a "core" of investors who'd like to see this happen, and would establish a foundation fund to buy the car and to provide funds for maintenance and such...

...then, a group of users would lease the car for use--

--I'm "banking" on the idea that a plug-in hybrid would allow the local user community to get the most out of the car without alot of costs for fuel...

...of course, long trips that use fuel would cost more to rent, but I'm also thinking that the insurance is a missing piece to my puzzle, and I'll be looking into that coverage options.

The point is to stay as green as possible, and go for the plug-in option right-off-the-bat, but I'm sure that this service would not appeal to everybody, so...these are my thoughts =)

... to dream along...

Perhaps even in the future a diverse fleet of cars:

A couple of Smart Cars for the single with a one-time trip.

The hitch and trailer option is great.

The insurance is the tricky part - and in every sense.

Getting drivers insured and getting the business insured to allow for damage to the car etc.

One way of keeping people from abusing the system, is perhaps by creating a online user account and people can give feedback about it each, leave comments and rate each other, based on how clean the vehicle is returned, etc. This seems to work pretty well online ( at ebay, amazon etc.)

First try to run the numbers with the prospect that to should be a profitable business venture - cause than it will be sustainable!! If those numbers are outrages - too high, start looking at alternatives.

biofuel?!?

Biofuel has gotten so much bad press lately - not sure if that is the way to go!?

Diesel- yes! Volkswagen is coming out with new TDI's this summer.

Perhaps you could get a car from a carmaker/dealership and get a deal if you advertise for them - big print on sides.

that might even be a possiblity for other businesses. I might advertise on the car with einmaleins.

check-out...

...SAAB.

I dunno about the "press", I read Google and then call myself =)

Algae is the "way to go" and I have an 2000 Ranger that is "flex-fuel", so I'm interested in the "buzz", but I agree...the way to go on this is with the Prius and the aftermarket plug-in upgrade-

-that way the local trips are electricity only (no fuel burned)...longer trips get more costly, but hat is understandable.

The "crux" is the insurance (full comp.), and it is really no big deal (I am receiving quotes already).

Further thoughts on the "biz" structure:

approach the NWCDC for guidance, and look at the IRS rate per mile:

NWCDC

IRS rate

...idea is to charge IRS rate & run the business as a nonprofit (which allows plenty of "room" and benefits versus commercial enterprise).

So, glad to see the interest, and I'm still moving forward.

Insurance

We share a Prius with our friends down the street (but they own another car too, so they own 1.5 and we own 1). It works great for us; we pro-rate all the expenses according to miles driven, which we track in a little notebook.

But getting the insurance took a lot of looking around. Finally, we have two people on the policy and two people insured as additional drivers. It might be easier with a corporation as the owner?

Best,
Thad

sweet comment

Thank you very much for sharing Thad...

...hopefully I will get a good rate quote.

...and "way to go" on the partnership with friends ( in my book, that is really commendable, "pro-active", and a great way to lead-by-example).

>cheers<

Hey Thad

Would you be interested in writing a sort've HowTo about this process for OlyBlog? I wonder how many more people would seriously look into doing a neighbor/friend car share if they realized they didn't have to reinvent French Toast...

great call enpen!

...makes me think of a community ride share. I'd love to hear the story of how it all started for Thad and his friends, and it sure was cool to hear about that today (very inspirational).

How we share a Prius

At first I thought there wasn't much to tell - we just did it... But that's not quite right.

  • We did it with people we've known for thirty years.
  • They live about seven houses down the street from us.
  • We've shared a number of other things with them over the years. We shared a lot of child care with them when our kids were little. We split a CSA share with them for a few years. We've co-owned a freezer with them for years - it's in their garage, so it's easy to get to. We've owned a several lawn mowers with them (one after another, not all at once). We're working (really slowly) on putting a mesh wireless network on our block to share a high speed Internet connection with them and other people.
  • They own another car, so there's a backup when two people want to drive at once. There's also somebody else on the block with another car that it would be easy for us to borrow, if we ever had to.
  • When we started this, my wife was retired and I was riding the bus to work. One of our friends was retired and one was car-pooling to Shelton, so she drove the Prius three days a week, but we knew in advance when it would be gone. Now I'm retired, and the one of us who's still working usually takes the bus. Bottom line - the four of us have probably been driving less than many people do.
  • Sometimes, we schedule ahead - when somebody's taking the Prius off on a trip, or when they want to use it for some regular, repeating event. For a stretch, one of our friends used it to go visit his mother in Lacey every Wednesday morning. Usually, we just call up a little ahead of time or at the last minute; I actually can't remember a single time when I've wanted to hop in the car and do an errand and it's been a problem, but having a backup car helps insure against that.

We bought the car second-hand, and split the price ($5,000 or so each). We keep a little book in the side pocket and each time you get in the car you enter the mileage before you drive off, if you're switching from one household to the other. (If your household drove it the last time it was driven, you just keep driving.) When you put gas in, or take it to the garage, you enter what you spent in the book. One of us enters this stuff in a spreadsheet, and we split all the expenses according to how much each household has driven.

Problems?

  • As I said a while back, it took a fair amount of calling around to find an insurance company that didn't say "Share a car? Why would you want to do that?" Progressive insures us by having one person in each household on the policy and one person in each household listed as additional drivers. We haven't had any claims. They only give the primary drivers little insurance cards, not the additional drivers; I wish I had a little card too. We carry 250K, 250K, 500K and comprehensive and collision with a $500 deductible - the premium's $695 a year.
  • At one point, we let the car go for considerably longer than I wish we had without getting the oil changed because I was assuming that our friends (who used to drive rally races and are much more interested in cars than I am) were taking care of getting it serviced, and actually none of us were paying attention to it. But it only happened once - now I'm explicitly in charge of making sure the oil gets changed on time.

It works fine for us - but as you can see, a number of things help it make it easy which aren't part of every possible car share.

Wow...

...this is sweet. Thanks for sharing the info. Marcie and I are gonna need to trade in one of our cars soon. The Prius co-op is a fantastic idea. Living nearby the other co-owners seems essential.

Seconded

That is super cool. I would totally be game for something like that.
