Sponsored by: The Center for Community Based Learning and Action and the Peoples Legal Defense Fund

WHERE: The Olympia Center - 222 Columbia St NW in downtown Olympia

WHAT: This will be a moderated conversation for the whole community on what happened at the port and why. Various groups will be represented and willing to answer questions. The goal is to achieve some closure on the events around the protests and to move into the future, not divided, but as a community.

Hope to see you all there.

What various groups?

Will the city be there or were invited?  Could be a good thing to have this meeting...

well,

Many were invited, the City and PD declined to appear in an official capacity due to pending investigations, open cases etc.

I made early offers to help with organization of WTO type

legal action, including making contact with the attorneys who won some of those important cases against the Seattle PD, but I felt snubbed. I don't think the attorneys who responded to my contacts were invited to the community events and I have backed away from any involvement with the legal action. I am not likely to offer any further assistance with the cases because, as a freelance paralegal business, I do not want to look foolish when I am making contacts to law firms and there is no followup.

I have trouble understanding turning away an offer of pro bono or zero upfront legal assistance from businesses and firms that are engaged in legal issues every working day, but there it is.

I have no doubt that the folks who continue to work on the port issues are well-meaning, but I have felt that the actions of OPD belong in the courts and any community building that needed to be done would have to proceed in the context of establishment of a citizen oversight board through litigation and negotiation.

As Frederick Douglass has noted: Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.

No worries, Mike

I used the contact information you gave me and called the law firm in Seattle (who had been talking about what happened here and were interested) and got them in touch with our local lawyers and now the ball is rolling. There will absolutely be civil suits, they're already being worked on. I agree that the best place for these conversations is in court.

good to hear.

I had a few contacts from the Seattle firm asking for more info, but I never heard anything, had nothing to tell them and we dropped out on the potential project.  My office manager was very pleased that this project evaporated for us and we are on to other things.
