So, I have been noticing kind of a flat and stale atmosphere around here recently. There have been some changes. Maybe it would be good to discuss them. No more docents. Personally, I am relieved to have been relieved my docent responsibilities, though I do feel some loss, and I would like to figure out how to best contribute to the blog.

I like OlyBlog. I think it is a promising avenue for people who care about this community to communicate and to dialogue about what exactly is going on. I mean, we can post photographs and video, and offer rebuttals to some of the views that might be expressed in the mainstream establishment (corporate big business) media outlets. Here I have a chance to offer a different perspective - my own perspective. And so do you. And so do we, collectively.

On OlyBlog there is the possibility to have civil discussion (yes, it's not perfect - and not as good as in person - especially for emotional items). But at least people can express their viewpoints, and hopefully not be in fear of being attacked, or suffering a reprisal because of it. So we have an opportunity to have a conversation, and through that, perhaps, it can be a goal to project a collective perspective. - Being realistic, I realize that this might not be possible. At least we have a venue to express a collective perspective that may have been formed elsewhere.

So OlyBlog exists as a forum for organizing ideas and movements, for networking and consciousness raising. Maybe it's just a place to go to find something to do when you're bored...

I also love the concept of public citizen journalists rivaling the establishment media structures. Competition (insofar as it is fair competition!) is healthy.

What's your take? What does OlyBlog mean to you? I would love to read some thoughts about what OlyBlog is doing right, and what could be better.

Is it all just smoke and hot air, or what?

»

Yes it is

Just smoke and hot air. Too much emphasis on a certain political view and narrow enforcement and personal vendettas by some admin.
»

Hmm.

For as much as you piss and moan about OlyBlog, you sure seem to like reading it. Why do you keep coming back? Just curious.

Sincerely, Frederick

Under that line of logic

Under that line of logic does that mean you think that everyone who bitches about our great Republic should leave it as well?
»

Haha.

I hope you didn't hurt yourself making that stretch!

Seriously, though, that was a deplorable rebuttal and my comment wasn't even aimed at you. That's the problem with OlyBlog right now, though. Little cliques have formed, those cliques have picked different lunch tables to sit at, and now people are resorting to ad hoc arguments rather than intelligent discussion and debate.

But then again, I suppose that's the nature of "discourse" on the Internet.

Sincerely, Frederick

If you think my comment was

If you think my comment was "deplorable" I would encourage you to read your comment again. My point was if someone wants to bitch and complain but still take part thats great. It means Olyblog is still relevant. When people stop bitching you have to worry. That's all.

logic

Maybe I should just let this go. But I want to make sure I understand correctly. Under your logic, OlyBlog.net is comparable to "our great Republic"?

»

I think it is. It is like a

I think it is. It is like a micro-version of old school town meetings. Think of it this way, you and I probably disagree on almost everything yet we are in the same place discussing things we care a lot about. You and I would never run in the same circles or have many of the same friends, yet, just as in town meetings we both are here. The Republic is a lot like that. A community of communities. I am just not one of the "If you don't like it, take off!" kind of people. That is the only point I was trying to make.
»

OlyBlog Is as Our Great Republic, Is.

okay, that's awesome. Just think of the power we arm-chair pundits have.

Okay, when can we decide to stop the war?

»

Seriously though, I hear you.

But seriously I hear you. And I think that OlyBlog does have potential to be a town-hall type forum. I think there are some serious issues with identity, accountability and anonymity that need to be addressed, before that happens, though.

Re: OlyBlog

what OlyBlog is:

a community mirror

what OlyBlog does:

facilitates expression and interaction

what OlyBlog is worth:

that is anybody's guess

In my opinion, OlyBlog does all it "needs" to do...and the CJ is good & getting better.

I'm not sure what civil dialog looks like, and I'm unsure if it really exists (kinda like the idea of democracy)...

...a great ideal & goal, but with the scant amount of social capital involved with OlyBlog, I'm amazed that we get what we get and that it is as good as it is...kudos to the whole crew (past & present, big hugz =)

I think OlyBlog should be used to organize block parties and mixers, maybe even in cooperation with neighborhood associations.

Stale atmosphere...

...yup.

For me, it started with the local only enforcement.

I know, I know... there are plenty of places to discuss national and international events BUT not with your neighbors! Olyblog is good at providing for a somewhat sane discussion.

It got staler when Tsch and S6 were banned. Boring. When everyone agrees with each other it is boring.

Then the recent events that have resulted in some strong OlyBlog contributors leaving... Staler still. (There's a big hole in ma heart ever since ya went away, gang.)

I hear you Bert.

»

I agree with you Bert. I

I agree with you Bert. I have discussed it with other readres of the blog. It did start with the strict local enforcement stuff. It seems that the overwhelming majority of folks simply agree with each other and others have been made to feel unwelcome (right or wrong) or banned. The site is not the same, however it is still relevant.

"So, I have been noticing

"So, I have been noticing kind of a flat and stale atmosphere around here recently."

I have noticed this as well. My desire to contribute to Olyblog has waxed and waned over time, it is currently in a down phase right now. I truly don't know how I feel about Olyblog at the moment. I am rather disenchanted with it's creator and his decision making.

The air seems to have changed as well. I keep checking Olyblog for something that fits "me" and concluded that it's the place to go if I want to hear how much Olympia hates cops, their government, when the next protest is gonna be, and when the next impeachment articles are going to be delivered.

»

I agree.

There's been a tremendous amount of cop bashing, city council hating, finger pointing, and general negativity from a core group of contributors here for quite a while, now. Sometimes it seems like people just come here to vent. Blah. That's not the purpose.

Sincerely, Frederick

I'm still in shock

But OlyBlog changes are just part of the cause of my shock - I've had several big life challenges happen recently, including the death of a good friend.

I really miss enpen/Jason's participation here and I don't really understand what all happened. Fortunately we can find him and others over at Olympia Standard. We can also find people at Oly Forums.

That said, I think OlyBlog will do just fine. There is room for all sorts of community web sites. I was one of several voices encouraging folks to roll their own blogs/sites/forums etc. and I'm pleased that expansion is happening.

I especially appreciate our ongoing collection of south sound history stories.

I wonder how much the fact that this is summer plays into less participation currently on OlyBlog.

I personally have not been able to write much lately, that is mostly a reflection of my own life stress.

shaking the trees

I don't call it blues, I call it 18 months ago. This is about the tenor and tone, if my memory serves, at Olyblog before the port protests blew up and everything started getting all weird.

The good thing is that instead of running back to the unblogosphere that existed before Olyblog, people are making their own things: Olympia Standard, Olyforums, etc.. etc... I'll always be here, but I'm going to be those other places too.

Olyblog is Dead! Long Live Olyblog!

We Are OlyBlog

Walk the talk, folks. If you want to change the blog, then make an original post and add content. We are in a constant state of building. It is easy to make negative or snide  comments, but harder to create an anchor post.
