The other day I was engaged in some light recreational reading, enjoying School Districts' and Support Services : Edmonds, Evergreen, Federal Way, Kent, Lake Washington, Puyallup, Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma and Vancouver. This is the State Auditor's performance audit report of the largest school districts in Washington.

At any rate, I saw something familiar on the cover. It was a photo of my alma mater, the old Washington Junior High School, now known as the Esther Knox Building and HQ for the Olympia School District.

Excuse me, but do you see Olympia listed in the school districts in the title? No? Then why is an Oly school building gracing the monograph's covering? Why, there oughtta be a law about this kind of thing (he says crankily in monotone while shaking his fist in mock anger).

You can see it for yourself, but the pdf took about five years to load on my old machine.

In the LBJ era, Olympia had only two junior high schools-- Washington and Jefferson. They consisted of grades 7,8,9. We all fed into only one high school, OHS, grades 10-12. In 1969, the swell of Baby Boomers required more space. A new Washington opened up south of the old building. Meanwhile, a third junior high school, Reeves, also started in 1969, but the building wasn't ready for occupation in the fall, so the Reeves kids spent half of their first year in the old building. On moving day, some time in Feb. 1970, I believe, every child carried a piece of furniture to the new digs.

As an additional point of trivia, Mr. Reeves was my grade school principal at Roosevelt Elementary when I started there. He lived a block or two away from me on Eastside St. and I helped deliver newspapers to his house. He frequently greeted my buddy and I as we tossed him his copy of the Daily Lump O' Pain. He was a good guy.
