This is the third in a series of eight posts about the eight folks who want to take Doug Mah's old seat on the Olympia city council. This will be a short one, so I might get around to writing another one if no one minds and I have the time. Karen Veldheer has an axe to grind, and that's pretty much all you need to know about her application to the city council. According to her application, the vast majority of her civic participation has been in her Cooper Crest neighborhood association. Don't get me wrong, I love NAs. In many ways they're the heart and soul of civic life in Oly. But, they should be more of a constant presence and less of a "lets's win this battle" sort of organization. Karen V.'s fight has been with her homebuilder, who she said built a sub-par subdivision. The Olympian: Homeowners sues developer In this process, I think we're looking for qualified people above people with a cause. Having something you want to do would be great if you were running for office, but not a great thing if you're trying to find a qualified replacement.

I have yet to see either council person or mayor make a difference--
--Didn't TJ get jumped because he expressed concern over rising sea levels?
To me, this community seems on the verge of wrong growth
Zero green-built standards or incentives
Zero transpo planning that does not focus of autos/no plan to get less traffic in the core
Zero civic space
Will be interesting to see Oly under Doug & what the new council works on--

Submitted by emmettoconnell on Fri, 12/21/2007 - 5:12pm.That's pretty bad (within, with in). I'm pretty sure the reason for the quick turnaround on appointing someone the first week of January is so they'll be on board for when the council does their retreat.
They usually set a plan for the year at the retreat. Probably high on the list will be city hall.
