Ignorant Movie Review: Gabrielle
» Response to title: The name probably has some denotative value and...I just don't know it. Response to curbside poster: ooooo...sultry. Response post-credits: This is a French movie with English subtitles. It is a psychological mystery with an extremely interesting take on psychological perspective. When the action is focused on Gabrielle's solipsistic husband Jean, the film is black & white; when other personalities creep into his reality, the film goes color. The mystery is not of the traditional "who done it" variety (you're explicitly told), rather, it is the mystery of perspective: who is a person, and can you ever really know a person? The movie is a tour de force of symbolism. You need to pay attention to colors, the perspective afforded by a given camera angle, the written vs. spoken word, the archetypal personalities, the titles/jobs of the characters and the constant juxtapose of animate and inanimate "objects". Without knowing an individual's movie preferences, I would have an extremely difficult time recommending you go see this. However, if you like arthouse films, I think you would stand a very good chance (near 100%) of thoroughly enjoying this movie. One last thing that I happened to notice in glancing up at the credits while packing up my stuff: this film is an adaptation of Joseph Conrad's short story The Return, a title which I find much better than Gabrielle. Rating: 4.25 out of 5 Oly Stubbies Film Haiku: Who are you today? "Honestly. Look at yourself." You change tomorrow.
