I really need lurkers to participate in this poll!

And everyone else, but especially lurkers. In that way, we'll be able to get a good measure of how many folks are using OlyBlog. I'll post some estimates after I've analyzed the results.

I only come by the actual

I only come by the actual blog once in a while -- I subscribe to the RSS feed of the homepage & read those posts via Google Reader. I visit when something looks especially interesting or when I think the comments might be good. So I skim a lot. (I find the site loads pretty slowly a lot of the time, and I don't like getting bogged down in reading some of the longer arguments.)
»

site loading slowly now?

Recently I have noticed the site loading faster than usual.
»

Once in a blue moon it will

Once in a blue moon it will load slowly for me (I'm not counting times that I use WebTv.) Yesterday it wouldn't even open at a KAOS computer in IE. It opened slowly in Firefox and I was able to see that what was bogging it down was something that Jusby had attached.

WebTV?

Those things still get support?

I'll check the site about

I'll check the site about everyday, mainly just to skim through recent posts, once I'm done I usually go  wallow in my own pity for the fact that I haven't contributed for several months.

I typically use safari as my browser and have had no problems with the site loading.

Everyday

I have a routine in the morning of websites I check, starting with Salon.com, then local news, i.e. KOMO and Daily Zero, followed by Olyblog. Then on to CNN and NY Times. I don't post much anymore. Reading the threads, I often have the experience you see when people of different languages try to communicate, in that they unconsciously start shouting, as if the louder one talks the better one will be understood.
»

relevancy

I find the posts and stories within the last 6 months to be inaccurate representations of life in the downtown area. The stories could more accurately be listed under the "poor on 4th" category.

I think a whole lot more happens than the antagonistic accounts of posters 'telling it like it is'.

Do you have some examples of what you mean by that?

Lurk more than write

I don't live in Olympia. I live in Tumwater. Hence, I feel that much of what I might write or report on is not of interest in a hyperlocal context. Christie

Think Tumwater counts as hyperlocal

I used to come quite a bit

I used to come quite a bit and was excited about the site when I first ran across it. The amount of posturing, whining and complaining got to be too much for me. I log in occasionally to see if anythings changed but always seem to go away disappointed. I'd love to see more actual info on stuff happening around here(more than just "anti" events) and less nastiness. From the admittedly limited stuff I've logged in to see in the last few months(and the recent spectacle as well) it looks like both sides in any given argument are equally unpleasant. In MY opinion, it looks like those in control are nasty as they want to be, but since they are in power can kick out the dissenters for disagreeing(unpleasantly at times). That's just fine, as it is their own site and they can slant it any way they please. It does get annoying for the high amount of hypocrisy and self righteousness coming down though. The message seems to be clearly -do as we say not as we do. I value my time too much to waste time reading that kind of thing. I've already spent way too much time on this comment. I'm not going to respond to any replies, as I have no desire to get sucked into the muck and most likely won't be back for another couple of weeks(months?) Just my (admittedly limited) observations.

Derek Summed It Up

eloquently in just a couple of sentences:

The question is...  Are "those in control" listening and will they realize where they might be wrong and correct the behaviors?

Onry...

...do you really think that any docent has been as destructive to good will here as Chris or Jeff? I get pissy every once in a while, but I apologize when I do, as do Rob R., Rob W. and others. But whenever Jeff or Chris get called on their behavior, it just turns into an argument about censorship and they never take any responsibility for being inappropriate. That's why we're all frustrated. If they would just own up, apologize, brainstorm about how to do it better, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

From my perspective, yes

From my perspective, yes some docents have acted as destructively.

There was an apology, but frankly it doesn't seem like there were any lessons learned. It's not being directed at me, but the same people are still firing shots back and forth.

It's going to be pretty funny after you line all these guys up against the wall how these patterns are going to continue with new faces and voices.

On topic, I read this blog weekly for the very occasional interesting local tidbit, and to see if people will every be able to get along.

It's like watching the Odd Couple being performed on the Titanic.

That's A Choose A Side Question

I don't know if I'm really comfortable answering Rick!  I'm not trying to be evassive or anything either but there have been times when we've all gotten out of line and either apologized or saw and acknowledged the error of our ways!  Including Chris & Jeff!

That said, as you know, when you're passionate about something, you fight for it.  Sometimes effectively, sometimes ineffectively.

If I were sitting on a jury that was asked to ban someone for something, I don't think I could agree to their banning given some of the things Rob's been allowed to say & do around here and not faced any consequences for.  Are all 3 of them in the wrong a lot of times?  Yeah.  But that's my opinion and it may not be the opinion of others and that's OK.

Do I think it's right or fair that Robert hardly posts in here and then when he does it's a topic that opens a can of worms for many and when it doesn't go the way he wanted it to he threatens banishment or actually bans somebody?  No.  If he posted on a daily occurance and responded to more topics, I'd think differently for sure.

I posted on another thread what my solution to this would be, I think it was Merwyn's thread about closing comments, and my solution would be to ban topics, not people.

I'm sorry I'm not able to take a side and answer your question better but for me right now, it's all about fairness and looking at other ways to solve problems!

Good question

"Are "those in control" listening and will they realize where they might be wrong and correct the behaviors?" But it is a question ALL of us need to ask ourselves, not just the docents. Every one of us has control of his or her behavior here.

Those in control..

In my humble opinion I think the Docents do a great job at trying to keep this blog clean and are even way too lenient and forgiving on some users.

Those who fear control or a strike system may just have a hard time controlling themselves. This forum was created for the community but if this community cannot police themselves this site is theirs (the Docents) to mold and do as they will with. There aren't public funds at work here and all their workI consider a great gift to this community. It is sad to see there are some out there who knowingly cause this site harm. It isn't impossible to be civil, we should all make sure we do our best to do so.

As a social experiment I would like to see these Olyblog uprisings and arguments documented and charted to see if all this garbage corresponds with the weather/seasons. Be patient folks Spring is just around the corner.

OTD

Great post. You speak for many of us, I suspect.

"Those who fear control or a strike system may just have a hard time controlling themselves" is a very elegant way of presenting a truth.

Thank you. I'm not in lockstep with the docents on politics, but I agree with you they have been more liberal than I would be with certain "Look at me! Look at me! Look at me now!" individuals who seem to crave negative attention.

I hope you'll contribute more to OlyBlog in the future.

I am a lurker (mostly). I

I am a lurker (mostly). I check olyblog about once every day and I echo the sentiments of the people who wrote that the comment threads are too nasty. I have to be feeling in a pretty good mood to read the comments, some people are vicious and say things online because they can’t get away with saying them in person. Usually I just read the main page for news and events and also like others, I wish there would be more hyper-local news/comments/experiences.
»

Thank you for the input

^_^

Would you be more likely to participate in OlyBlog conversations if there was less nastiness in the comments threads?

I think there are a lot of people who are turned off by the nastiness.

»

Not quite daily, less as of late though.

I am a mostly lurker

I am a mostly lurker recently turned poster. I check about every other day and usually enjoy the blog when the material isn't offensive (as in normalized violence). When things get offensive, I tend to avoid it.

When I first saw your post, Rick...

...I thought, "where do I vote if I check OlyBlog like 20 times a day?"

I can't be the only one that thought that - can I?

I'm in that boat as well

And I'd like to make it more see-worthy.
