Ron Suskind, The Way of the World: A Story of Truth and Hope in an Age of ExtremismWow, this is damning. Is it true? Did members of the Bush Administration order intelligence agencies to create false reports in order to justify invading Iraq? A lot of people have been saying that's the case (for a long time). Maybe we can get closer to the truth as a result of this Congressional Probe. If it's true, that allegations that Bush Administration officials manipulated intelligence in order to suit their private interests in a war of choice, then it certainly gives support to the local anti-war advocates who have been working so hard, and who have invested so much in protecting our troops from reckless foreign policy and the abuses of the Bush Administration. Hopefully Congress will do what is right based on the finding of this probe, and if justified, take appropriate action to protect American Soldiers from the alleged abuses of members of the Bush Administration. From DemocracyNow.org:
After Ron Suskind Reveals Bush Admin Ordered Iraq-9/11 Fakery, House Judiciary Chair John Conyers Opens Congressional Probe

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ron Suskind joins us for part two of an interview on his new book, The Way of the World: A Story of Truth and Hope in an Age of Extremism. Suskind reports that in 2003 the White House ordered the CIA to forge and disseminate false intelligence documents linking al-Qaeda and Iraq. While much of the attention on the book has focused on the forged letter, Suskind also reveals that the Bush administration and the British government knew prior to the war that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction. We also speak to Rep. John Conyers, chair of the House Judiciary Committee, which is investigating some of the explosive findings in Suskind’s book. [includes rush transcript]

news you won't find at theolympian.com

I wonder how this story will break in the mainstream establishment media - and if it even does, what kind of follow-up attention it will receive. I mean, if the finding of the probe is that members of the Administration committed wrongdoing in regard to creating a false case for war, then it doesn't seem possible that they could avoid reporting on the only logical outcome of such a finding: Impeachment Investigation / Hearings.

Ron Suskind Interview Part One

This is hardly hyperlocal.

Why the bump to the front page?

I think it pertains...

...to the port activities. I'm interested to see a discussion of how this related to local actions, and responses to local actions.

Beware the terrible simplifiers.

Local Relevance

Obviously, the alleged malfeasance of Bush Administration members has national and international implications. But it also has local relevance. Perhaps no more so locally than in other localities. But it is my belief that this community is blessed to have a high energy and diverse anti-war/peace/justice movement, from Interfaith and Oly FOR to Veterans for Peace, Women in Black, RCFPJ, to groups like OMJP and PMR, to Food Not Bombs, and etc. - as well as other groups and organizations that may not be specifically anti-war, but are definitely sympathetic to the cause. This is a special community, there is an active resistance to what is perceived (and I wholeheartedly believe rightfully so) as a deliberate hi-jacking of our government by men and women who are willing to cheat and deceive in order to fulfill their personal world-view of global dominance.

These are national and international problems. But it is important to notice that, given the inability (or lack of will) of the Congress - and the Fourth Estate - to exercise any sort of practical oversight or accountability in these matters, it may be only on the local level that any sort of accountability or justice / just response may be exercised.

This is a long answer. The short answer is that I think local resistance is the best chance we have to stop aggression committed by OUR federal government.

Support for the War

My question is how people can continue to support President Bush and his wars, in light of information like this.
