Does anyone know who made the re-painting in the Eastside? You know, the one that looks like a thrift store painting, but if you look carefully you notice the added mushroom cloud in the background.

Also does anyone have a photo of it?

detournement

That is known as detournment and came out of the Situationist International.

I couldn't tell you who did the one you saw, I do know that banksy uses detournement a lot. Here's an example of his work:

I think he went by the name

I think he went by the name YardBird. He used to hang out at the Slide all the time, and moved south to Louisiana a number of years ago. There are a couple of old posters along the ceiling by pool table #1 that advertise his art shows. He was a regular during Arts Walk when the Slide had regular participation.

hey

Could you tell us what is/was the Slide?

RR, you don't know what "the 'Slide" is?

ha ha

all this talk of "community", and you don't know (now that is funny)

It's not my fault.

I actually can't hang out at the Eastside because my body has an adverse reaction to the combination of dirt and patchouli oil. :)

CRITTER Clarification!

The painter was a short friendly man who often wore a hat, and if I remember correctly, overalls, a bit on the rotund side, who went by the name CRITTER. I got confused, because he used the logo of the old Yardbirds to advertise his art, (a bird head with a big smile). The store was downtown Olympia, on Capital Blvd, across from where the Boardwalk apartments are nowadays, a few blocks from Farmers Market. There used to be one in Chehalis or Centralia, always get the 2 confused, and one in Shelton. Actually, part of Yardbirds was where the Phoenix Inn is too. Critter was an active artist in the early days of Arts Walk. You could see his stuff all over the place.

Here's a picture of Critter (dressed as a critter...)

(...from Halloween at the "slide" in 1998.)

I was told he moved to Asheville, and still happily makes his environs in that fair appalachian city...

Critter as Critter

The Slide

nickname for the Eastside Club, as The Crippler is the nickname for the Clipper, etc.
»

The Crippler is because of fights if I heard correctly,

where does "The Slide" come from? I'm imagining that its how one might pronounce 'Eastside' after a few too many dark beers.

My recollection of why it's

My recollection of why it's nicknamed "The Crippler:"

Strong drink to the point of feeling like you may be crippled.

And this was just as true two Friday's ago.  While I didn't drink anything other than 'Vitamin R' (Rainier), a few friends were bent on 2 well drinks.

You're right, EG...

...drinks not fights, man.

Other Bar nicknames from my nights in Cabland

During the time I was finishing my BA at TESC, and for a few months after I drove a taxi cab three nights a week, Thursday thru Saturday. It was more than a job, it was paid entertainment. Here is a partial list of the establishments who liquored up my clientèle

The Bubbahood: This should be obvious

The Mongoliod: The Mongolian Grill across from Petco.

The Grief: The Reef

The Sow Paw: The South Pacific in Tumwater.

Nikki's: Nickelby's.

McCoy's: McCoys. I guess it wasn't worth a nickname. Still isn't.

The Dog: The Greyhound bus station. I know, not very imaginative.

And for you old codgers,

The Ball AKA Freeballing AKA The Hut AKA That Fuckin' place: The Evergreen Ballroom.

My favorite

My coworker actually thought the real name was "Capitalist" Lake. Quality.

Inspired by him, I've taken to calling it Capitalist Mall.

I Vote

OilyFrog for this bar!

Nicknames

I've heard over the years:

Capital Mall = Das Kapital Mall, Capitalist Mall

TESC = Evergroove State College, Evergrowing State Crisis, "That Place"

SPSCC = Spaz Tech

East Capital Campus = Space City

Olympian = Daily Zero, Daily Lump O' Pain

Legislative Building = Ledge Building, The Ledge

Gov. Rosellini = Big Al

Gov. Evans = Dan the Man

Gov. Ray = Dixy Lee Radiation

There are more, but it starts degenerating.

Oh,

I forgot. Mud Bay was once known as Shitpoke Flats. And then it really gets worse. No. Seriously. I'm not kidding. Someone needs to write Puget Sound version of Pissing in the Snow and Other Ozark Folktales (by Vince Randolph, 1976) to cover this local underground glossary.
