Does anyone know who made the re-painting in the Eastside? You know, the one that looks like a thrift store painting, but if you look carefully you notice the added mushroom cloud in the background.

Also does anyone have a photo of it?

The City of Olympia has now seemingly made it their policy to sweep homeless camps using probation work crews. They do this without an answer as to where these people can go without being disturbed.

They also have consistently done this without contacting direct service providers. Organizations like the one I work for, Bread & Roses, and our close partner EGYHOP, can at the very least provide harm reduction services to campers who are forced to move. I feel justified in saying that I don't trust the City of Olympia to effectively advocate for individuals transitioning from one campsite to another. It's not their job to be advocates, which is why they should seek out advice and help from those whose job that is. I should be very clear, however, that this is not a role I'm willing to fill over and over for years to come. I simply will not be a part of people being pushed around from one unsafe environ to the next. I think that viewpoint reflects the overall view of the homeless advocate community.

Being that there is going to come a point, likely sooner than later, where advocates are going to start refusing to aid the City in this capacity, the City should think long and hard on one question. 'Where can people go and be left alone?'

If Steve Hall, the Council, or Staff can quickly answer that question, then a lot of time can be saved on providing people with stability, which we've learned from Camp Quixote is therapeutic and empowering.

What does Oly think of abstract art? I see many galleries hosting artists who create figurative works. I wonder if this community, or any community for that matter, prefer figurative over abstract art work?

I thought I'd repeat this blog from last year.  I'm not sure of the connection, but "coffee" and "street" reminded me:

I offered a new Olyblogger a cup of coffee.  It was really a whimsical gesture for her efforts and yet it brought back a great memory I'd like to share.

I was in Portland for business and had a hour or so to blow before a networking meeting, so I decided to hit one of the downtown coffee spots for an injection.

It was a beautiful day and decided to take the coffee out to the street tables, where I came upon a man enjoying his coffee and a fine cigar.  Since I don't really smoke them anylonger (since my heart attack) I asked if I could sit by him and enjoy his enjoyment.  He invited me to sit and we began to talk.

It turned out that he had lost his wife in the past few years, thus was on his own, as his daughter was an attorney in another city.  He had made his money with 11 McDonald's franchises and sold them back to corporate.  He was now enjoying the sunset of his life with a female companion that called during our conversation (he put her off in lieu of talking to me).  We sat there in the sun and talked for about an hour.  I asked where the Elephant Deli was, told him why I was going there, he gave me great directions and said to say hi to several people (I was going to an event planners meeting).
